- The fifth in a series of nationwide nursing home surveys done by the National Center of Health Statistics
- Sample size of 1488 of the estimated 17,000 nursing home facilities in the US ( 8.7%)
- Sample size of 8138 current residents of the estimated 1.6 million residents in the US ( <0.5%)
FACILITY CHARACTERISTICS
- For profit homes (67%), nonprofit homes (26%) and government homes (8%)
- Average bed size is 107 beds of which 88% were occupied
- Home affiliated with other homes in a chain represented 57% of all homes
- There was an average of nine admissions per month (1996 data)
- The average daily charge (private pay) was $136 per day or about $4080 per month
RESIDENT CHARACTERISTICS
- Most residents were > 65 years (91%) with almost half (48%) being > 85 years
- The average resident was an 81 year old woman
EMPLOYEE CHARACTERISTICS
- There was an average of 57 employees providing direct care for each 100 beds
- Nursing assistant (33.9 per 100 beds or 2.7 hours per bed), licensed vocational nurses (10.6 per 100 beds or .85 hours per bed) and registered nurses (7.8 per 100 beds or .62 hours per bed). This results in 4.2 hours per bed of nursing time.
